Who are we?
We are a typical early-stage start up consisting of a loose knit volunteer team of engineers, scientists, sales and marketing professionals, and entrepreneurs. Nearly all of us are silicon-valley start up veterans.
What do we do?
As is described in detail on the web site, we are developing a solar energy system that should be economically viable and is geographically more flexible than other utility scale energy systems being promoted today. The StratoSolar concept provides opportunities for solar power for geographies that cannot engage with solar power today and it is also a realistic alternative for current solar energy solutions.
On a daily basis we are incrementally following the engineering development path with the limited resources at our disposal. It’s a process of continuous refinement ultimately leading to a detailed engineering design and a prototype system. The tutorial document details some of this, but the detailed design phase involves a great deal of evaluation of trade offs and solving hard problems.
When did we start?
The idea started back in 2007. The company incorporated in 2008, after considerable investigation and analysis showed the concept was practical, original and patentable. The first patent application filed in March 2009, and published in October 2010. Several more patents are in process.
Why do we do it?
The compelling motivation is working on something that could do so much good for the planet should it prove successful. Such opportunities are rare. However from the earliest stage it has been a difficult concept for many people to either grasp conceptually, or accept as practical. The magnitude and unfamiliarity of the solution seems to intimidate. The StratoSolar proposal is a large and novel construction project with a strong emphasis on both the large and the novel.
